About the Wally12Million Arts Fund

Established in 2014, the purpose of The Wally12Million Arts Fund is to support residents of the NWT pursuing post-secondary studies in fine arts or music.

Wally12Million is a solo project that Walter composed and performed, and is available on SoundCloud.

Application process

Individuals interested in applying must create a profile on our scholarship application portal. Once your profile is created, you will need to complete our eligibility quiz and then submit a scholarship application to the Wally 12 Million Arts Fund.

Applications will be made available during our scholarship intake season, in April/May 2024.

The Wally12Million Arts Fund was established in 2014 by Thomas and Elaine Girrior in memory of David Walter Girrior, to support post secondary students studying fine arts or music.

Please note that award amounts vary year by year.

In order to be eligible to apply for the Wally12Million Arts Fund, you must be:

  • A resident of the Northwest Territories for at least 12 consecutive months
  • Entering their second or subsequent year of studies in fine arts or music at a recognized education institution or be enrolled in a post-graduate program of study in fine arts or music at a recognized educational institution.

All of our scholarship application forms and additional materials need to be submitted on our scholarship application portal

  • You will submit a portfolio featuring two or more examples of original art (photos are acceptable) or music (sound files are acceptable). Unique materials will be returned once a final decision has been made.
  • You will submit a personal reflection on your portfolio.
  • You will complete a questionnaire describing your involvement in your community.
  • You will write a brief statement describing your academic achievement.
  • You will provide the email address of a reference to describe your academic achievement. Your reference can be a teacher or a mentor from the arts community. We will email your reference a recommendation form to fill out.

You must be an eligible resident to apply for a scholarship.
As such, YKCF requires you to make a residency declaration and have a witness sign off.
However, you do not need to print out any forms!
Each residency declaration is a one-click question embedded within the application process.
You just need to provide the email address of your residency witness, and they will be emailed directly.

You can only apply through our online application portal. In 2024, the application portal opens on April 2nd.
