About the Haylee Carlson Memorial Legislative Assembly Fund

Established in 2014, the Haylee Carlson Memorial Legislative Assembly Fund (formerly known as the Legislative Assembly of the NWT Fund)’s purpose is to support residents of the Northwest Territories who are pursuing post-secondary education in political science or a related field. 

The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly and the Yellowknife Community Foundation announced a name change to the Fund on October 3rd, 2023 to memorialize Haylee Carlson. Haylee was integral in establishing the Fund in 2014. 

Application process

Individuals interested in applying must create a profile on our scholarship application portal. Once your profile is created, you will need to complete our eligibility quiz and then submit a scholarship application to the Haylee Carlson Memorial Legislative Assembly Fund.

Established in 2014, the Haylee Carlson Memorial Legislative Assembly Fund (formerly known as the Legislative Assembly of the NWT Fund)’s purpose is to support resident of the Northwest Territories who are pursuing post-secondary education in political science or a related field. 

The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly and the Yellowknife Community Foundation announced a name change to the Fund on October 3rd, 2023 to memorialize Haylee Carlson, who was integral in establishing the Fund in 2014. 

Haylee believed that education was life long and was on her own education journey before she passed away from breast cancer in 2020 at the young age of 37. Haylee was a compassionate, courageous, selfless warrior who always thought of other before herself even at the last stages of her life.

Please note that award amounts vary year by year.

In order to be eligible to apply for the Haylee Carlson Memorial Legislative Assembly Fund, you must be:

  • A resident of the Northwest Territories for at least 10 years prior to applying
  • Pursuing post-secondary studies in political science or a related field
  • Some examples of a related field can include; public policy, law, political research, journalism or public administration

All of our scholarship application forms and additional materials need to be submitted on our scholarship application portal

  • You will complete a questionnaire describing your community involvement, your reasons for pursuing your program of study, and what you hope to accomplish with your education.
  • You will write a brief statement describing your academic achievement.
  • You will provide the email address of a reference to support your application. Your reference can be a teacher, mentor, guidance counselor, etc. We will email your reference a recommendation form to fill out.

You must be an eligible resident to apply for a scholarship.
As such, YKCF requires you to make a residency declaration and have a witness sign off.
However, you do not need to print out any forms!
Each residency declaration is a one-click question embedded within the application process.
You just need to provide the email address of your residency witness, and they will be emailed directly.

You can only apply through our online application portal. In 2024, the application portal opens on April 2nd.

Mailed and emailed applications will not be accepted barring extreme circumstances.
