About the Maureen Tonge 'Living Your Legacy' Fund

Established in 2023, the purpose of the Maureen Tonge ‘Living Your Legacy’ Fund is to:

  • Provide a scholarship for residents of the Northwest Territories pursuing post-secondary studies in the mental health and wellness 
  • Support organizations conducting community initiatives and programming with a focus on improving the mental health and wellness of youth in the Northwest Territories

Each year, the Fund will switch from providing a grant to an organization or a scholarship to an individual. In 2024, it will provide a grant to an organization in the Northwest Territories. In 2025, it will provide a scholarship to a resident of the Northwest Territories.

Application process

For the grant option of the Fund, we accept applications from charitable organizations that have a valid charitable number from Canada Revenue Agency. If you are a non-profit organization that does not have a registered charitable number, you may still be able to apply. Please call our office to discuss +1-867-446-4527. 

To check that your charitable number is in good standing, visit Canada Revenue Agency or call 1-800-267-2384. 

Organizations interested in applying must create an organizational profile on our application portal. Once your profile is created, you can submit an application to the Luke Charpentier Memorial Fund. 

For the scholarship option of the Fund, we accept applications from Yellowknife residents of at least 12-consecutive months. Individuals interested in applying must create a profile on our scholarship portal. 

In 2024, the Fund will follow the scholarship option.

Scholarship Option (Available in 2025)

The purpose of the scholarship option of the Maureen Tonge ‘Living Your Legacy’ Fund is to support residents of the Northwest Territories pursuing post-secondary studies in mental health and wellness

Please note that award amounts vary year by year.

The scholarship option of this fund is available to students who have lived in the Northwest Territories for 12 consecutive months prior to applying.

Applicants must be pursuing post-secondary studies in mental health and wellness.

All of our scholarship applications forms and additional materials need to be submitted on our scholarship application portal

For students that are applying to the Maureen Tonge ‘Living Your Legacy’ Fund, here are some things that you will be including in your application:

  • A personal statement describing your goals in your field, why you are interested in learning about mental health and wellness, and how you have contributed to your community
  • The email address of a reference, such as a teacher, coach, instructor, etc.

Please keep in mind that all applications to YKCF scholarships require the applicant to complete a residency declaration, and provide proof of acceptance or enrollment in their program.

The purpose of the grant option for the Maureen Tonge ‘Living Your Legacy’ Fund is to support organizations conducting community initiatives and programming with a focus on improving the mental health and wellness of youth in the Northwest Territories.

Through the grant option of the Fund, The Maureen Tonge ‘Living Your Legacy’ Fund is open to charitable organizations (organizations with a registered charitable number) conducting activities in the Northwest Territories.

Grants from the Maureen Tonge ‘Living Your Legacy’ Fund are designed to complement new and/or established programming and/or community-based activities related to the mental health and wellness of youth in the Northwest Territories. 

Applications are reviewed by our Grants Committee.

  • All successful applicants will be required to submit a final report through our online portal.
  • We want to hear from you during the lifecycle of your grant! Please reach out anytime with an impact story, picture or video, or just to say “Hi!”.
