Elaine Keenan Bengts

Elaine Keenan Bengts has lived in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories since 1970, and is a graduate of Гcole St. Joseph’s High School in Yellowknife. She went on to obtain a BA and an LLB from the University of Alberta and then returned to Yellowknife where she has spent her entire career, originally with the firm of what was then Searle, Richard Kingsmill before launching her own firm in 1988 under the name of Keenan Bengts Law Office, focussing largely on family law. In 1997, she was appointed as the Northwest Territories’ first Information and Privacy Commissioner, which is a position she continues to hold. In January, 2015, Elaine closed her family law practice to concentrate fully on her role as Information and Privacy Commissioner for the two Northern Territories. In addition to her roles as lawyer and Information and Privacy Commissioner, Elaine has been very active in the community, most prominently as the president of the Yellowknife Gymnastics Association, a position she held for nearly 15 years, during which time she spearheaded the fundraising for and the construction of the gymnastics facility in the Multiplex. She has also been an active volunteer with Sport North, the Yellowknife Volleyball Association, the Yellowknife Slowpitch Association and other sport organizations as well as a number of professional organizations, both locally and at the national level.
