Originally established as the NWT Mining Heritage Society Fund in 2008, the fund was first used to support the development of a museum and tourist centre at the site the old Giant Mine using some of the former mine buildings. In March of 2024, The Yellowknife Historical Museum was opened to the public. Now, the fund supports the programs of the Yellowknife Historical Society.
