Established in 2008, the original purpose of the NWT Mining Heritage Centre Fund was to develop a museum and tourist centre in the A-shaft head frame area of the old Giant Mine site using some of the former Giant Mine buildings. In March of 2024, The Yellowknife Historical Museum was opened to the public. Now, the fund supports the on-going operation, maintenance, and upgrading of the museum.
