Community Program Lead (Summer Employment)
Location: Yellowknife, NT (in-person)
Term: 8-9 weeks, beginning early July 2025
Position Type: Summer full-time (37.5 hours / week)
Potential for continued employment part-time (10 hours/week) during the school year
Eligibility: applicant must be between 15 and 30 when they begin employment (funded by Canada Summer Jobs)
Rate of Pay: $26 / hour
Position Overview:
The Yellowknife Community Foundation is hiring a summer student to help launch an exciting new program!
We’re looking for someone who:
- Is curious about the world of philanthropy, non-profits, and community-building
- Brings creativity, initiative, and a problem-solving mindset
- Enjoys working in an office atmosphere on a computer and is comfortable with digital tools
- Is ready to develop new skills while taking the lead on program design, with guidance and mentorship provided along the way
The Yellowknife Community Foundation is launching the Yellowknife Small Grants Program (see here for example), which will offer small grants of up to $1,000 to support local, grassroots projects that build stronger neighbourhoods, and provide support to grant recipients as needed. As Community Programs Lead, you’ll play a central role in shaping and rolling out the program. There’s also potential to stay on part-time during the school year to help implement and grow the program. Key Responsibilities:
Program Development
- Attend planning meetings with Yellowknife Community Foundation staff, board, and partners.
- Research similar programs and meet with other Community Foundations to gather best practices.
- Assist in setting up the application and reporting process using grant management software.
- Draft the application guide and supporting materials in plain language.
- Design a program webpage on our website using WordPress.
- Develop branding and social media templates in Canva.
- Draft a Terms of Reference and onboarding/training materials for the Grants Review Committee.
- Support recruitment of committee members and prepare board briefing notes.
- Create outreach and promotional materials, including presentations for schools and community organizations.
- Develop an Ambassador Worksheet and work with Executive Director to engage potential donors to support growth of the fund.
Program Launch
- Help with advertising and communication of program launch.
- Help facilitate the first committee training session.
- Promote the program and support applicants.
- Provide application support to interested individuals or groups.
Other Duties
In addition to leading the development and launch of the Yellowknife Small Grants Program, the Community Programs Lead may:
- Assist with community outreach and public education efforts related to charitable giving.
- Engage with current grantees to collect impact stories and develop social media and marketing content to promote giving opportunities and highlight community impact.
- Participate in research projects or surveys that help the Foundation understand donor and community needs.
- Provide general support for events, presentations, and fundraising campaigns.
- Attend community events.
- Assist with documentation, reporting, and administrative tasks to help preserve organizational knowledge and support smooth operations.
Skills & Assets:
- Interest in community-building, leadership, and non-profit work.
- Strong communication and writing skills.
- Comfortable with or eager to learn basic design and digital tools (WordPress, Canva, grant making software).
- Organized, reliable, and motivated to support positive local impact.
- Willingness to take initiative and try new things, with support.
- Ability to manage tasks independently while collaborating as part of a small team.
- Attention to detail, especially when creating written materials or organizing applications.
- Respect for confidentiality, inclusivity, and community diversity.
- Previous volunteer or leadership experience in school, sports, or community (an asset).
