On July 25th, 2024 YKCF held its annual appreciation barbeque at the Baker Centre. It is a cherished tradition that brings together fund holders, sponsors, community partners, grant recipients, student award recipients, board members, and staff.

The evening started with many farewells and introductions. The community gave their heartfelt thanks to former Executive Director Sophie Kirby, as well as outgoing board members Paul Gillard, Jason Snaggs, and Elizabeth Doyle. At the same time, we welcomed our new Executive Director, Korry Garvey, along with Administration and Grants Coordinator Alexander Weir, and new board members Patrick Wrigglesworth, Roman Asmundson, and Megan Holsapple.

One thing that never gets old is the ability to put names to faces and build connections in the community. Teresa Martin, recipient of the Lilly Borges-Oldham Language Scholarship Fund, finally met the Oldham family in person, sharing a meal and conversation with them.

“I had the great pleasure of meeting with the Oldham family, where I learned about Lily Borges-Oldham’s dedication and love of learning about different cultures and languages. [Her] evident passion continuously inspires me as I pursue my French language and cultural studies at a post-secondary level. In the future, I hope to apply my studies to work on expanding access to French language resources in our healthcare system.”

It was a beautiful summer evening full of friendships new and old. We can’t wait to see everyone next year!
